Code is poetry written for machines, read by humans.

Satya Sampathirao

Senior software engineer in New York, at Scout for Schools — using AI to take busy work off teachers so the hours go back into teaching.

01 — Work

Nine roles, newest first.

Each one is a set of holes on the roll. Open a role to read what it was — and, more usefully, what limited it.

Scout for Schools

Software Engineer
Mar 2026 – nowNew York

Education

Taking busy work off educators with AI, so the hours go back into teaching.

  • TypeScript
  • React
  • NodeJS
  • AI/LLM
scoutforschools.com
The brief
The work that accumulates around teaching — everything administrative that attaches itself to every student — takes hours from the part of the job that actually needs a person in it.
The decision
Applying AI to the busy work rather than to the teaching, so the time it gives back goes to educators.

Evvy

Senior Software Engineer
Apr 2025 – Mar 2026New York

Women’s health

Precision healthcare built on vaginal microbiome science. Ecommerce order processing and prescription fulfilment pipelines.

  • TypeScript
  • React
  • HealthTech
evvy.com
The brief
Half the population has a microbiome that clinical medicine has barely characterised, and the path from a test result to a treatment someone can actually take is a supply chain, not an insight.
The constraint
A prescription is a regulated object. Fulfilment has to be correct on the first attempt, every attempt.
The decision
Order processing and prescription fulfilment pipelines — the unglamorous machinery between a sequenced sample and a treatment arriving at a door.

A.Team

Full Stack Engineer
Sep 2022 – Apr 2025Remote

MVPs taken to production

LLM-powered clinical tools for healthcare providers — medical documentation and decision support, built and scaled from MVP to production.

  • NextJS
  • NestJS
  • AI/LLM
a.team
The brief
A sequence of companies each needing the same thing: the distance from an idea to a system real users depend on, walked once, correctly.
The constraint
Every engagement a different domain, a different existing codebase, and a team that had to be productive in it within days.
The decision
Built MVPs and took them to production rather than to demo — healthcare applications, LLM-powered clinical tools, and commerce platforms.

NEquest

Co-Founder / CTO
Oct 2021 – Oct 2024San Francisco Bay Area

Neurological care

AI-powered neurological care democratising access to brain health. Motor assessment from video using TensorFlow, Mediapipe and Google Vision AI.

  • React Native
  • TensorFlow
  • Mediapipe
  • Google Vision AI
The brief
Neurological assessment requires a specialist in the room. Most of the world does not have one, and the signal being assessed — how a body moves — is visible to a camera.
The constraint
A phone camera, ordinary lighting, and a patient who is not a technician. No wearables, no clinic.
The decision
Motor assessment from video: pose and landmark extraction feeding models that score movement, built to run on the device the patient already owns.

Clearco

Senior Software Engineer
Jul 2021 – Jul 2022Toronto

Founder financing

Products and tools helping founders access capital and grow their businesses.

  • NodeJS
  • Vue
  • NestJS
  • PostgreSQL
clear.co
The brief
Founders raising growth capital were being underwritten on documents when the evidence of their business was already sitting in their revenue data.
The constraint
Underwriting decisions had to be defensible, so the inputs had to be auditable end to end.
The decision
Built the tooling that turns connected commerce and banking data into an underwriting position.

OANDA

Software Engineer
Jul 2019 – Jul 2021Toronto

FX trading

Growth strategy across Registration, Compliance and Customer Experience at a global FX trading leader.

  • TypeScript
  • React
  • FinTech
oanda.com
The brief
At a global FX broker the distance between arriving and trading runs through registration, identity and compliance — and every step of it loses people.
The constraint
Regulated in every jurisdiction it operates in, so the funnel could be shortened but never loosened.
The decision
Growth work across Registration, Compliance and Customer Experience as one path rather than three departments.

Polymath

Full Stack Developer
Apr 2019 – Jul 2019Toronto

Securities on Ethereum

DApps on Ethereum for the world's first legal compliance integrated platform for security token offerings.

  • Ethereum
  • Solidity
  • Web3
polymesh.network
The brief
Securities law is a set of rules about who may hold what; a token contract is a set of rules about who may hold what. Nobody had made the two the same object.
The constraint
On-chain, and therefore immutable — compliance logic had to be right before deployment, not after.
The decision
Built DApps on Ethereum for the first legal-compliance-integrated platform for security token offerings, encoding the restriction at the transfer layer.

Trimble Transportation

Software Engineer II
Jul 2018 – Jan 2019Minnetonka

IoT in transportation

Distributed applications for IoT devices in transportation. Object formats re-architected around a centralised repository for interoperability.

  • IoT
  • Distributed Systems
  • Java
trimble.com
The brief
Fleets of IoT devices emitting telemetry in formats that had accreted per-device, so nothing downstream could read anything it had not been written for.
The constraint
Devices already in the field could not be reflashed, and the formats they spoke could not be broken.
The decision
Re-architected the object formats behind a centralised repository, so interoperability became a property of the schema rather than of each consumer.

AOL — StyleMePretty

Software Engineer, Full Stack
May 2015 – Jun 2018New York

Publishing

Immersive web experiences at publishing scale. Universal JavaScript applications with server-side rendering.

  • ReactJS
  • Redux
  • NodeJS
  • AWS
stylemepretty.com
The brief
A publishing property serving millions of readers a month on a rendering path that could not keep up with its own traffic.
The constraint
Editorial output could not pause for an engineering rewrite, and the audience arrived on phones long before the site was built for them.
The decision
Universal JavaScript with server-side rendering — one codebase rendering on both sides of the wire, so the first paint came from the server and the session continued on the client.

02 — Index

What was used, and when.

One row for each column of the roll. A technology counts only for the years a role that used it was running — nothing here is self-rated, so nothing has to be taken on trust.

  1. TypeScript / JavaScript

    2015 — now · 8 of 9 roles

  2. React / Next.js

    2015 — now · 6 of 9 roles

  3. Node.js / Backend

    2015 — now · 6 of 9 roles

  4. Distributed systems

    2018 — 2022 · 4 of 9 roles

  5. AI / ML integration

    2021 — now · 3 of 9 roles

  6. Python

    2021 — 2025 · 2 of 9 roles

  7. AWS / Cloud

    2015 — 2026 · 2 of 9 roles

  8. Java / Scala

    2018 — 2019 · 1 of 9 roles

Also shipped: Vue and NestJS (Clearco), Redux (StyleMePretty), Solidity (Polymath). Each sits inside a single role, so it is listed in that role’s stack rather than given a row.

03 — About

A note on the text.

I write software for places where being wrong is expensive: a ledger that can’t be edited, devices already in the field, a prescription that has to arrive right the first time.

The work is translation. What a person means becomes what a machine needs — and comes back as something a person can trust. Since 2015 that has meant publishing to eighteen million monthly users, IoT fleets, securities on Ethereum, a foreign-exchange broker, underwriting, neurological assessment from video, clinical tools built on language models, a women’s-health platform, and now schools.

Building software that scales, but never forgetting the humans it serves. The rest of the time I’m thinking about the questions below.

  • AI alignment & ethics
  • Distributed systems architecture
  • Policy & governance in technology
  • Building things that matter

The name, in three layers

Satya is a word before it is a name: it means truth. A reader sees two things. Unicode sees four. A disk holds twelve bytes. One word, three readers — which is most of what the work above is.
